Crossing the line
Article Abstract:
Nurse anaesthetists were first introduced in the US at the beginning of the century, but the idea that they might be introduced in the UK has outraged anaesthetists and split the nursing profession. Nurse anaesthetists could provide an answer to what is now a dangerous shortage of anaesthetists, and at least three trusts are actively pursuing the idea. However the idea has been emphatically rejected by the Assn. of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland. Many nurses are opposed to the introduction of the US model in Britain, although some feel that it deserves consideration as a possible option.

Over-use of neuroleptics in nursing homes
Article Abstract:
The medical profession is increasingly worried about the unnecessary use of tranquillizers to calm mentally ill patients in long-term nursing care. Many believe that drugs such as chlorpromazine and thioridazine are administered far too frequently for the good of patient care. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the overuse of neuroleptic drugs occurs all over the country although little factual information is available to support this.

Dogged determination
Article Abstract:
Seven racing greyhound dogs have been rescued by British nurse Anne Finch since the neglect they suffer in Spain was brought to her attention by a newspaper article. She is now campaigning to stop Irish greyhounds being exported to Spain, and believes that her nursing skills have assisted her in this work, giving her the confidence to approach people.
