Breaking the silence
Article Abstract:
Counselling in adulthood may help child victims of sexual abuse come to terms with their experience. Clients may have difficulty talking about an experience that has resulted in guilt feelings and low esteem. The counsellor must establish a trusting relationship with clients and help them to work through shame, direct anger away from themselves and recognise self-worth. The counsellor can encourage the development of self-esteem by believing the client and emphasising their achievements.

Treating the adult survivor
Article Abstract:
A psychiatric nurse has been able to help a young woman who had been sexually abused as a child by using a flexible behavioural approach incorporating cognitive therapy, relaxation training and an exposure programme. The sexual abuse came to light following the young woman's visit to her general practitioner complaining that she blushed easily. The use of an assessment approach based on the Roy adaptation model and the young woman's subsequent treatment are described.
