Breast care nurse improves outcome
Article Abstract:
Community-centred support helps to reduce the psychological morbidity of women who have breast cancer surgery, according to a study of 272 patients. Psychological morbidity was lowest among patients who only received support from a breast care nurse rather than those who received hospital-based support, possibly because patients saw the nurse peri-operatively and could have direct telephone contact. The breast care nurse also provided patients with emotional support and information.

Changing from person to cancer patient
Article Abstract:
A patient diagnosed with cancer can quickly change from an outgoing, lively character to one who is inward looking and quiet. Cancer patients need to be supported during the period before final diagnoses, with further support needed to come to terms with the disease and how the quality of life for the patient may alter. Researchers have found cancer patients go through a series of three stages during the diagnoses stage, transforming from an individual into a patient.

The effects of cancer on body image and sexuality
Article Abstract:
Patients' sexuality and body image are greatly affected by the diagnosis of cancer. Health professionals often overlook the sexual problems brought about by patients feeling bad about their bodies. Body image is affected by surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Nurses can help patients by counselling them.
