Breathe a little easier
Article Abstract:
Patients suffering from cancer-induced breathlessness can improve their condition by attending a specially-designed nurse-led clinic, according to research conducted in the United Kingdom. Some 65% of patients with lung cancer suffer from breathlessness, which is particularly distressing as many see it as life threatening. The clinic nurses prepared an eight-week course which involved not only exercise strategies but a psychosocial examination into the patient's lifestyle. Nurses working in the clinic required professional and personal support from other medical staff.

A cloak to fit all?
Article Abstract:
The idea that nurses are professionals in their own right has been difficult to maintain because most occupations attributed with professionalism are predominantly male. Four health care leaders provide their ideas about a new style of professionalism for nurses who are taking on more responsibility, making decisions and delivering a high standard of work for their patients. Old ideas about the nurse-doctor relationship must be dispensed with to allow changes in the role of nurses to continue and progress.
