Duty and the beast
Article Abstract:
Learning to cope with patient's pets is an important skill for community nurses, who may come across aggressive animals in the homes of their patients. Nurses need to educate patients about the health aspects of animal ownership and psychological difficulties an animal may suffer when a new baby arrives in a family. Dogs benefit from contact with children before a new baby arrives, making it easier to cope once children are mobile. Cats should be encouraged to stay out of babies rooms. Pets can play a vital role in family life if owners are well informed and confident in their management.

Powers of diplomacy
Article Abstract:
UK community nurses face difficult decisions when trying to cater for the wishes of families where the needs of the patient must come first. Employing diplomatic powers and providing information for families is an ideal way for community nurses to help families to come to a decision which is in the best interest of the patient. Many families wish to take an active role in caring for a family member, although they need support and advice from health care professionals to carry out the necessary tasks.
