Calcification of the transverse ligament of the atlas in chondrocalcinosis: computed tomography study
Article Abstract:
There appears to be an association between calcium deposits on the transverse ligament of the atlas (TLA) and articular chondrocalcinosis (AC). The TLA is a connecting fiber that runs across the base of the neck. Researchers took cross-sectional images of the neck and upper spine with computed tomography of 21 patients with AC and 21 age-matched hospital patients (controls). Sixty-six percent of the patients with AC (14 of 21) and none of the controls had calcium deposits on their TLA. Nine of the 14 patients with calcium deposits had no previous neck symptoms such as fever, neck stiffness or pain, or elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. These calcium deposits were either thick and in a double band (4) or thin (6), curved (6), and in a single band (4). All of the calcium deposits were behind the tooth-like projections on the vertebra.

Prevalence of articular chondrocalcinosis in elderly subjects in a rural area of Catalonia
Article Abstract:
Several factors may affect the incidence of articular chondrocalcinosis among elderly individuals. Articular chondrocalcinosis is an age-related disorder that affects the joints. Some patients have attacks of goutlike symptoms, but many have mild symptoms or none at all. Among 261 individuals over 60 years old who lived in a rural area of the Osona region of Spain, 10% had articular chondrocalcinosis. All subjects had hand and knee x-rays when they visited their doctor for a checkup or for another disorder. Women were more likely to develop articular chondrocalcinosis than men, and the incidence increased significantly with age. The occurrence of articular chondrocalcinosis was approximately the same among individuals born in the Osona region as among those born outside this region.

Analysis of the association between chondrocalcinosis and osteoarthritis: a community based study
Article Abstract:
Patients with chondrocalcinosis seem to be more likely to also have osteoarthritis (OA) than those who do not have this disease. Chondrocalcinosis is a condition characterized by calcium deposits in the joints. Doctors analyzed hand and knee X-rays of 26 elderly patients with chondrocalcinosis and 104 age-matched patients without chondrocalcinosis for additional evidence of OA. Patients with chondrocalcinosis had more evidence of mild to severe knee OA, particularly in the side section of the knee joint. These patients also had a higher frequency of OA in nearly all the hand joints measured, particularly in the first three wrist to finger joints of the left hand.
