Article Abstract:

The issue of the nature of psychiatric illness and its treatment has been highlighted recently in the UK as a result of the conviction for the murders of Lin and Megan Russell of Michael Stone, who had been diagnosed as having anti-social personality disorder. Mental health charity SANE believes that there is a need for specialist units as an alternative to prison and secure psychiatric units. This view is shared by the government, which has been developing plans for secure units to treat offenders suffering from personality disorders.

The UKCC has recommended that doctors, nurses and other professionals working in health care should have more joint learning sessions. The authors of a report, led by Professor Carolyn Miller, believe that health professionals should study together team awareness, role understanding, communication and teamwork strategies.
