Capital's property boom making London a no-go zone for nurses, experts warn

Article Abstract:

The UK nursing staff shortages will only be exasperated as nurses are forced to seek accommodation to rent and buy outside the London area because of increasing property prices. An average terraced house in the London area costs up to 126,200 pounds sterling in 1999, whereas the same property would cost about 40,978 pounds sterling in the Yorkshire region. Pressure groups are urging the government to consider a programme of house building which would target those on low pay and allow them to rent or buy while staying in the London area.

UK Shadow Health Secretary John Maples has refrained from making policy statements during his five months in office. He maintains that the health reforms launched during the period of Tory government were successful, and he believes that Labour promises concerning the health service are not been fulfilled. However, he says he will continue to operate a listening brief until Christmas 1997, by which time Labour policies on the health service will be clear and open for attack.

There have been a number of reports recently indicating there could be negative aspects to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Health union Unison has now called for an inquiry into the use of ECT on older people. It is clear that ECT can bring clinical benefits for some people with mania, schizophrenia, depression and neuropsychiatric conditions, but it can also have side-effects, including long-term memory loss.
