Carbohydrates: what role do they play in your diet?

The body uses carbohydrates as fuel for functioning. The brain uses carbohydrates as its primary source of energy. Carbohydrates are mostly obtained from plant-based sources such as grains, vegetables, fruits and legumes. Of the three types of carbohydrates, sugars provide 4 calories per gram, starches 4 grams, and fiber has no caloric value.

Artificial limbs: they look and work more like the real thing
Article Abstract:
One improvement in artificial limbs is spring-loaded feet that take less energy to use in walking. Another is electric arms that use an external power source. Myoelectric arms use muscle contractions to control movement. Technology can even give a sense of touch to artificial limbs.

Hidden calories: they can add up fast

Some foods that seem healthy are actually high in calories. These foods include certain condiments, such as mayonnaise; alcoholic beverages; soft drinks; nuts; yogurt; muffins; and fruit juices. Some reduced-fat foods are still high in calories.
