Leukemia: there are reasons for hope
Article Abstract:
The word "leukemia" is no longer synonymous with "terminal." An increasing number of patients are overcoming the disease. The overall five-year survival rate has gone from 14% to 42% since the 1960s. The blood disease results from a genetic mutation in bone marrow cells and is largely unpreventable. The risks increase with age, previous cancer therapy, genetic predisposition and environmental hazards.
