Caring for neonates
Article Abstract:
Nurses on neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) should remember basic principles of infection control. Reports on outbreaks of infection have revealed the pathogens which placed immature infants at risk. One study found that nosocomial infections on a German NICU were caused by gram-positive bacteria in 51% of cases, with staphylococcus aureus being a common factor. Another report shows the gram-negative bacteria Acinetobacter junii to be a significant pathogen inducing acute septicaemia. Salmonella enteritidis affected six babies in a London NICU.

Tuberculosis in homeless people
Article Abstract:
A report, published in 1996, has recommended that the extent of tuberculosis (TB) in homeless people in the UK should be investigated. About 6000 people are estimated to be living rough, some of them women and children. Poor diet, increased exposure to the bacterium and late diagnosis put homeless people at greater risk. Strategies for dealing with the TB problem include appointing someone to coordinate the work of the agencies involved with the homeless, tailoring health care to the needs of the homeless and educating health workers about TB.

Taking the strain
Article Abstract:
A UK working party published recommendations in 1998 concerning the control of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection in hospitals. The guidelines suggest basic procedures for infection control, but identify risk factors which should also be considered by the infection control team. These factors include the extent to which MRSA is established in the hospital, and the vulnerability of the patient group. Interventions, including isolation and screening, should relate to the risk factors.
