Case 23-2006: A 36-year old man with numbness in right hand and hypertension
Article Abstract:
A case study of a 32-year old man admitted to the hospital because of a mass in the right adrenal gland is presented. He had been well until seven months before admission, when numbness developed in his left arm, a week after he had been in a motor vehicle accident. The patient was diagnosed to have the Von Hippel-Lindau disease with R167Q mutation, associated with adrenal pheochromocytoma, brain-stem and spinal chord hemangioblastomas and liver hemangiomas.

A 12-year-old girl admitted to a hospital with fever, vomiting, and loss of consciousness died from meningococcal encephalitis. This is a severe infection of the brain caused by a bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis. This devastating disease is one reason why the meningococcal vaccine was developed.

Case 26-2003: a 50-year-old Colombian man with fever and seizures
Article Abstract:
A 50-year-old Colombian man who had a seizure was diagnosed with a brain infection called encephalitis caused by herpes simplex virus type 1. This virus is a common cause of viral encephalitis in the US. He was successfully treated with acyclovir and valacyclovir.
