Castles in the air
Article Abstract:
Former health secretary Barbara Castle is dismayed at the current state of the National Health Service (NHS), which she is convinced the present Conservative government intends to privatize, but looks back with pride at some of the achievements of her two years in office. She is most proud of having introduced child benefit and of having implemented the Halsbury report on nurses' pay. As well as enshrining the principle of fair pay, Halsbury raised the status of nurses in the eyes of the public. Castle's time as health secretary was, however, overshadowed by health service disputes such as a row over pay beds.
