Control of tuberculosis - the law and the public's health
Article Abstract:
Control of the spread of tuberculosis is one of the most important public health issues of the 1990s. The incidence of tuberculosis is increasing with more patients suffering from multi-drug resistant tuberculosis. Multi-drug resistant tuberculosis is a more deadly form of the disease with a high mortality rate. The resurgence of tuberculosis is associated with the HIV epidemic and the increase in homelessness and substance abuse. States have the right to require health care professionals to report patients with different infectious diseases. The right of the state to confine patients with tuberculosis is more controversial. An alternative to involuntary confinement is excluding tuberculosis patients from crowded environments. Another alternative is to require individuals diagnosed with tuberculosis to undergo directly observed drug therapy. In this scenario, the healthcare worker would watch patients while they took their anti-tuberculosis medication.

Human rights and health - the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 50. (Sounding Board)
Article Abstract:
December 10, 1998 marks the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It was adopted by the United Nations in 1948 to prevent some of the horrors that occurred during World War II. Article 25 has special significance for health care workers because it confirms the right of everyone to receive appropriate medical care. Many physician groups have led the fight for basic human rights, including International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Doctors Without Borders, and Physicians of the World.
