Child care: the missing link
Article Abstract:
There is a serious shortage of nurses in the UK yet the National Health Service has not inaugurated the family-friendly policies which would bring more parents back into the profession. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is lobbying the government on this issue. A 1997 study for the RCN revealed that workplace nurseries were available to only one third of nurses, and that only 5% of nurses used this service. The high cost of child care in the UK, and nursing shifts which do not match nursery opening hours, are other barriers to parents considering a return to nursing.

Nursing home to file complaint against BBC
Article Abstract:
The British Home and Hospital for Incurables in London, England, recently received negative coverage in an episode of the BBC documentary series 'The Rantzen Report.' This programme claimed that a patient who was severely disabled as a result of having viral encephalitis as a child was inadequately cared for. The home, which is regarded as a centre of nursing excellence and is a training centre for Nightingale nurses, has strongly refuted the claims, and has issued an objection to the fact that filming was undertaken there without permission.
