Sleepless and unsettled
Article Abstract:
A variety of complementary therapies have been shown to be effective in tackling insomnia which manifests itself in an inability to get to sleep, known as sleep latency, frequent waking after going to sleep, or waking early. Pain and anxiety, the principal causes of insomnia in hospital, both respond to complementary therapies. Chiropractic and hypnosis have been found to be particularly beneficial in treating pain, and therapeutic touch has also proved valuable either on its own or with other therapies. Herbal preparations, acupressure massage and aromatherapy are also useful.

Safe practices
Article Abstract:
Some complementary therapies could be harmful if carried out by unskilled practitioners, but some complementary techniques can be carried out quite safely by nurses, even nurses with no qualifications in the therapy. For example, nurses could incorporate commercial over-the-counter remedies such as homeopathic medicines, aromatherapy oils or Bach flower remedies into routine nursing care, after consultation with doctors. Qualified massage therapists could also teach nurses some reflexology or massage techniques.

Article Abstract:
Alternative therapies such as acupuncture or Bach flower remedies should be used to enhance the healing process within the traditional nursing environment. Complementary therapies often encourage and aid patient communication, a process which is vital for high-quality nursing care, and should be encouraged. Melodic Intonation Therapy uses music and rhythmical representations to help stroke patients regain some of their former communication skills.
