The full treatment
Article Abstract:
The UK government is keen to develop polyclinic minor treatment centres, where GPs and nurses would carry out more specialist and emergency treatment. Health secretary Stephen Dorrell sees such polyclinics replacing traditional doctors' surgeries. Under the polyclinic scheme, GPs would become responsible for some emergency services, post-operative care and chronic disease management, working closely with consultants. Nurses based in a practice would then on board some of the duties carried out by GPs at present.

Act of compulsion
Article Abstract:
There has been a mixed reaction to the UK government's proposal to allow mentally ill patients to be forced to receive treatment in their own homes. Mental health organisations and human rights groups believe the new law could lead to people being treated against their will and standards of nursing could be put at risk. The government believes the new law will enable community nursing to reach its full potential. Groups representing victims of crime perpetuated by the mentally ill welcome the proposals.

Laying blame
Article Abstract:
The parents of some cot death victims feel that a lack of care by health visitors could have played a role in the death, according to information from the Confidential Enquiry into Stillbirths and Deaths in Infancy (CESDI). Some families feel that they did not receive sufficient support from health visitors after the birth of the child concerned, and that they were not given enough information about issues such as drug use, smoking and sleeping arrangements.
