Cholesterol is a fat-like substance that is found in animal products and is a natural part of blood. Low-density lipoproteins can deposit cholesterol on artery walls, leading to atherosclerosis. High-density lipoproteins pick up deposited cholesterol. Blood testing and cholesterol reduction are discussed.

Drugs for treating cholesterol reduce blood levels of LDL cholesterol and other lipids. They include resins, triglyceride-lowering drugs and statins. Drug therapy may be necessary for patients at risk for cardiovascular disease who cannot control LDL cholesterol with lifestyle changes.
