Cigarette smoking and hearing loss: the Epidemiology of Hearing Loss study
Article Abstract:
Cigarette smoking may contribute to hearing loss in older people. Researchers tested the hearing of 3,753 people between the ages of 48 and 92. Current smokers were about 70% more likely on average to have hearing loss. Nonsmokers who were exposed to second-hand smoke were also more likely to have hearing loss. Hearing loss is relatively common in older Americans, but studies of rural African tribes reveal very little hearing loss with age. Consequently, genetic and environmental factors may be more important causes of hearing loss than aging.

Smoke gets in your eyes too
Article Abstract:
Physicians have one more reason to encourage their smoking patients to quit. Two long-term 1996 studies found that men and women who smoke more than 20 to 25 cigarettes a day have more than twice the risk of developing macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is a retinal disease that is a common cause of blindness in the elderly. There are few effective treatments for the condition. Smoking may contribute to macular degeneration by producing damaging oxidants or reducing blood flow in the retina. Smoking has also been linked to cataracts.

Statin use and incident nuclear cataract
Article Abstract:
A study is conducted to evaluate the relationship of use of statins and incident cataract in adults in a midwestern community in the US. Statin use in general populations appears to be associated with lower risk of nuclear cataract, the most common type of age-related cataract.
