Clear path ahead for specialists
Article Abstract:
The role of specialist nursing is changing and becoming more complex and this applies particularly to respiratory nursing. New technology has enabled nurses to perform duties formerly done by doctors, such as monitoring blood gases. However, patients do not realise that nurses have these additional roles and they need to be educated about this. Nurses also need to have confidence in their new partnership with doctors instead of being subservient. Lack of funding is also restricting the development of nurses' roles.

Article Abstract:
UK nurses are failing to become involved in the establishment of primary care groups (PCGs), according to research. The government is seeking to encourage nurses to play a pivotal role in the newly established health care service, although researchers have found doctors have taken over the main management and decision-making of PCGs. Part of the lack of nurses on PCGs boards has been blamed on the selection process which is balanced in favour of doctors.
