Clinical Goals and Performance Measures for Cholesterol Management in Secondary Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease
Article Abstract:
The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) has set the goal of reducing blood levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in patients with coronary heart disease to 130 milligrams per deciliter or less. This contradicts the recommendations of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP), which seeks a goal of 100 mg/dL or less. Elevated levels of LDL-cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease. NCAQ supported this goal but wanted managed care organizations to wait until there is evidence that it is feasible from an economic perspective to reach this goal.

Intensive lipid lowering with atorvastatin in patients with stable coronary disease
Article Abstract:
Lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels below recommended levels is beneficial in patients with acute coronary syndromes. Intensive lipid-lowering therapy with 80mg of atorvastatin per day in patients with stable coronary heart disease (CHD) provides significant clinical benefit beyond that afforded by treatment with 10mg of atorvastatin per day.

Trends in serum lipids and lipoproteins of adults, 1960-2002
Article Abstract:
Numerous US adults are examined to evaluate tendencies in their serum lipid levels from 1960 to 2002. Findings suggest that the reduction in total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, which has persisted during 1999-2002 among older men and women can be connected to the possible use of lipid-lowering medication.
