The article discusses the U.S. biomedical community that was full of optimism during the years 1998 to 2003 when the budget of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) was doubled. Though now they are facing the prospect of a new fifth straight year of no real growth in NIH appropriations.

Medical research activities, funding, and creativity in Europe: Comparison with research in the United States
Article Abstract:
The research funding, activities, and creativity in the European Union and the U.S. are compared. Data for research and development as a percentage of the gross domestic product demonstrate that the European Union is lagging behind the United States in research and development support.
