Coalition backs bill to let FDA regulate tobacco

Article Abstract:

A coalition of congressional supporters has introduced The Fairness in Tobacco and Nicotine Regulation Act of 1993. The bill would put tobacco industry regulation under the aegis of the Food and Drug Administration and would impose several restrictions on the marketing of tobacco. For example, it would set a national minimum age of 18 for the sale of tobacco and require the disclosure of additives, including arsenic and cyanide, being used in tobacco products. In addition, it would charge tobacco companies a manufacturing fee to pay for the costs of regulation.

Richard Riley's ties to the tobacco industry are generating criticism from a number of health and public interest groups because of his role as President-elect Clinton's transition team advisor. Riley's law firm represents Philip Morris Co, and interest groups are concerned that Riley's tobacco industry connections could influence him as he assists Clinton in choosing the surgeon general, the assistant secretary for Health and Human Services and US trade representative.

Smoking control advocates split over focus on youth

Article Abstract:

Smoking-control advocates face a number of hurdles in 1997, including internal division over their focus on curbing youth access to tobacco products. Tobacco-control efforts are further hampered by legislative debating over whether the Food and Drug Administration should be allowed to restrict the promotion of tobacco products to children.
