Cold comfort
Article Abstract:
Health union leaders in the UK have reacted negatively to the additional funding for the National Health Service announced as part of the government's comprehensive spending review. They have emphasized that the additional investment will be ineffective unless steps are taken to boost the morale of health workers. They feel that improved staffing levels, nurse-led initiatives and higher salaries are required if targets to boost patient care and cut waiting lists are to be met.

A hole of your own
Article Abstract:
UK nurses should be prepared to take on tasks traditionally carried out by doctors, while giving up menial tasks to lower qualified auxiliaries. Flexible working hours and increased productivity would help raise the professional standing of the nursing profession, while ensuring better rates of pay and a more motivated workforce. The system could work on a twice-yearly bonus payment which would be calculated on productivity rates related to waiting lists and workload.
