Community-acquired pneumonia
Article Abstract:
Appropriate therapeutic treatment for community-acquired pneumonia can be determined if preceded by careful diagnostic evaluation. Gram's staining and culture of expectorated sputum should be taken and the specimen carefully obtained. Cytologic screening should show lower-airway secretions. Computed tomography can be useful in detecting infiltrates. Blood should be cultured from most hospitalized patients. The severity of the disease should be evaluated before antibiotic treatment or hospital admission. If the pathogen is found quickly, decisions on treatment are easier and more appropriate. Without information from diagnostic tests, recommended regimens differ. The American Thoracic Society recommends the use of macrolides, while the British Thoracic Society prefers the use of penicillin or amoxicillin.

Vaccines to prevent viral hepatitis
Article Abstract:
Available vaccines against the hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) appear to be effective but costly. There may be many obstacles to developing vaccines against the other hepatitis strains because of their multiple genetic types and differing modes of action. Candidates for HAV and HBV vaccines include people previously exposed to infected patients or those frequently exposed to blood, intravenous drug users, those traveling to highly affected areas, and homosexuals. Routine HBV vaccination of infants has increased. The vaccines contain inactivated virus particles and most associated side effects are mild.
