Going mad with Smads
Article Abstract:
Smads appear to be involved in cell growth and differentiation. Smads is a group of at least nine genes that produce proteins involved in cells' responses to transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta). TGF-beta was so-named because it transformed cells, or caused them to become cancerous. It is now known to have many effects on the growth and development of cells. In some cases, TGF-beta stimulates cells and in other cases, it inhibits them. This can either stimulate or inhibit tumors. Smad2 and Smad3 respond directly to TGF-beta whereas other Smad proteins respond to other similar polypeptides.
