Comparison of methods for the detection of Treponema pallidum in lesions of early syphilis
Article Abstract:
A new test to detect early syphilis that does not depend on laboratory use may not be as accurate as laboratory tests. Researchers compared a new solid-phase enzyme-lined immunosorbent assay, or Visuwell test, to the standard dark-field microscopy test and to monoclonal antibody testing in analyzing genital lesions for Treponema pallidum, the organism that causes syphilis. The monoclonal antibody test and dark-field microscopy were more accurate than the Visuwell test. Specimen collection was simpler for the Visuwell and monoclonal antibody tests than for dark-field microscopy. The Visuwell test provides quicker results, although not necessarily accurate.

Sexual Practices and Prevalence of HIV, HTLV-I/II, and Treponema pallidum Among Clandestine Female Sex Workers in Lima, Peru
Article Abstract:
Regular condom use may protect prostitutes in Peru from contracting sexually transmitted diseases. Researchers tested 158 unlicensed sex workers at 15 brothels in Lima, and found that none were infected with HIV, 6 had human T-cell leukemia virus infection, and 5 were infected with Treponema pallidum. Three-fourths of the clients of the prostitutes used condoms at the brothels, although only 3% regularly used them with their regular sexual partner.

Molecular subtyping of Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum
Article Abstract:
Researchers have developed the first simple and reliable method of molecular subtyping for differentiating strains of Treponema pallidum, the organism that causes syphilis. Determining the subtype allows epidemiologists to monitor disease transmission patterns. Using restriction endonuclease digestion and polymerase chain reaction gene amplification, 16 subtypes of the organism were isolated from 46 laboratory samples.
