Complications of an intra-arterial injection from an inferior alveolar nerve block
Article Abstract:
Dentists describe a patient who felt as if the entire left side of her face was numb after receiving an injection of dental anesthetic in her jaw. Her dentist suspected the anesthetic had been mistakenly injected into an artery in the jaw as well as into the inferior alveolar nerve. The numbing sensation in her face wore off after about 20 minutes.

Immediate complications of local anesthetic administered to 1,007 consecutive patients
Article Abstract:
The local administration of anesthetics in dentistry rarely results in complications. Dentists conducted 2,528 injections of lidocaine in 1,007 patients. In 3% of cases, a blood vessel was unintentionally penetrated. One patient fainted, and patients felt discomfort from inadvertent nerve contact in 2.5% of cases.
