Computerized Pediatric Telephone Triage and Advice Programs at Children's Hospitals
Article Abstract:
Children's hospitals may have to charge more for their telephone triage and advice (TTA) programs in order to ensure their success. TTA programs provide health information to parents and the general public. A survey of 27 TTA programs in children's hospitals found that all 27 could not cover all their costs through the fees they charged for the service. Sixty percent charged on a per-call basis and 26% charged a monthly fee. The programs were losing between $74,000 and $1.3 million per year overall. The people who managed the TTA believed it provided a valuable service to doctors and patients.
