Pooling information
Article Abstract:
Midwives at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, England have monitored the use of a birth pool. Only women with normal pregnancies used the facility. Midwives measured collected data against a control group. About 171 women gave birth in the pool out of 302 who used it between August, 1990 and August 1991. Observations showed a greater incidence of perineal tears with a pool delivery. However, analgesic requirements were greatly reduced. The relaxing effect of the water may have contributed to this.

The history and development of children's hospices
Article Abstract:
The first children's hospice in the UK, Helen House, was opened in 1982 in Oxford as the result of a friendship between Mother Frances Dominica, a sick children's nurse and a terminally ill child. 16 hospices have since opened, with a further eight trying to raise funds. Helen House has been a model for some of the subsequent hospices, and they all aims to provide a family atmosphere. They provide respite care, home support or care, symptom control, terminal care and bereavement support.
