Computerized patient records taking hold, but slowly
Article Abstract:
The practice of computerizing patient records is becoming more prevalent but faces a number of obstacles. For example, studies have shown that physicians take more time in entering data on a computer than manually transcribing it; it can also detract from physician-patient interaction. However, these problems may be offset by the more extensive data and better diagnosis afforded by the system. In addition, the notion of patient records is expanding to include a record of health status, not just disease. Additional trends in computerized recordkeeping are discussed.

AMA board backs broader use of RBRVS
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association Board of Trustees has changed its position and now backs the implementation of the resource-based relative value scale (RBRVS) formula outside of Medicare. Private use of the RBRVS for physician reimbursement would preserve the fee-for-service system and would simplify price comparisons among physicians. The AMA emphasized that endorsing the RBRVS is not an endorsement of Medicare's reimbursement levels.

Drug market rebounds as prices hold steady
Article Abstract:
Although prescription drug prices have not increased much, increases in volume boosted total sales by 9% to $77,383,921 during 1995. Physicians are prescribing drugs as first-line therapy in lieu of surgery because they are being pressured by managed care companies to lower costs. Separately, generic drug prices dropped 11.5%, and mail order grew 14% but lost market share to food stores and pharmacy chains.
