Confidentiality in health care: a survey of knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes among high school students
Article Abstract:
Ensuring confidentiality may be an important step toward improving adolescents' utilization of health care. Among 1,295 high school students surveyed, 57.9% said they had health concerns they would not want their parents to know, and 68.5% said they had health concerns that they would not want their friends and teachers to know. About 25% said that they would not go for health care if their parents might find out, and about 15% said they would not go if their friends or teachers might find out. Females, white students and rural and suburban teenagers were most likely to have concerns about privacy and to forego health care if they thought their parents, friends or teachers might find out. More than half of the students questioned the confidentiality of services provided at school clinics. However, only a third were aware of their rights to confidential care for sexually transmitted diseases or drug problems.

Determinants of Counseling in Primary Care Pediatric Practice: Physician Attitudes About Time, Money, and Health Issues
Article Abstract:
Many pediatricians do not discuss preventive medicine with their patients' families. In a survey of 1,163 pediatricians, many did not cover preventive medicine issues such as substance abuse, family stress, and gun safety. Many believed they were not competent to discuss such topics or that the parents might not follow their advice. Some were also concerned about having enough time to discuss these issues or not receiving adequate reimbursement.
