Confronting prejudice
Article Abstract:
Many nurses have stereotyped views of gay men and lesbians and their lifestyles, according to the results of two workshops organised by an RCN working party. The attitudes of many nurses are based on assumptions about the heterosexual nature of people and a lack of knowledge about how health is affected by different lifestyles. Negative stereotypes and this lack of knowledge can mean that gay and lesbian patients receive prejudiced nursing. The working party is now collating data about gay and lesbian patients' experiences, with the aim of making proposals for good nursing practice.

Improving awareness
Article Abstract:
A survey of health professionals has revealed prejudice in matters of sexual health. Many exhibit intolerance despite public discussion of sexual matters. Nurses should recognise their attitudes so that they do not hinder optimum patient care. Nurse education has begun to address the issue of sexuality so that new recruits tend to be more open-minded than their older colleagues. Dispelling prejudice will encourage non-judgemental patient care.
