Conquering Cardiovascular Disease: Progress and Promise
Article Abstract:
Much is known about the risk factors for cardiovascular disease and how to prevent it, but the challenge is to translate this knowledge into practice. Since the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute was founded in 1948, doctors have discovered that most heart attacks and strokes are caused by blood clots in the heart and brain, respectively. In addition, many of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease have been elucidated. This has led to a drop of almost 60% in the death rates from coronary heart disease and stroke since the 1960s. More research is needed to determine exactly how obesity and diabetes increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease
Article Abstract:
Research on the use of thrombolytic therapy vs coronary angioplasty has found no significant differences in outcome. Both of these techniques clear up clogged coronary arteries. Hirudin is an anticoagulant that has been shown to be as effective as heparin when used in conjunction with thrombolytic drugs. Measuring muscle troponins may be useful in detecting patients with suspected heart attack. Research has shown that many patients with atrial fibrillation do not receive warfarin therapy even though they might benefit. Clinical trials are needed to determine if the Swan-Ganz catheter is beneficial.

Prospects for Cardiovascular Research
Article Abstract:
Research in cardiology focuses on atherosclerosis, which causes coronary artery disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular diseases. Coronary artery disease in turn contributes to most heart attacks, which in turn can cause congestive heart failure. For this reason, cardiovascular diseases have the greatest impact on public health.
