Conscientious objections
Article Abstract:
Representatives from Healthcare Opposed to Euthanasia (HOPE) and Nurses' Christian Fellowship (NCF) have been giving evidence to the UK House of Lords select committee on medical ethics following the court ruling, in the Tony Bland case, that food and fluids constitute medical care and can therefore be withdrawn. NCF does not think that the present law needs to be changed, but its vice-chairwoman does believe that some form of 'opt-out' clause is needed for nurses who have to implement decisions to withdraw feeding that they may disagree with. HOPE would support legislation clarifying the distinction between treatment and care.

Testing times
Article Abstract:
District nurses in Sheffiled, United Kingdom, are boycotting means-testing of patients who seek community care, but their protest is not backed by the District Nursing Association (DNA), which represents them. A DNA spokeswoman argued that nurses are well placed to gather information on patients' finances, since they are trusted, and if they fail to carry out means testing, more work could be taken over from them by social service departments. The boycott involves some 100 nurses who fear that having to ask about patients' finances could jeopardise their relationships with their patients.
