Coping with downsizing: stress, self-esteem and social intimacy
Article Abstract:
Social support systems provide nurses with their prime means of coping with stress and stressful downsizing times may make calls on such systems more urgent. A study of 71 surgical nurses confirmed this theory and suggested that highly educated nurses use this coping mechanism in stressful downsizing times. Results indicating that older nurses deal better with job-related stress may be because they have more experience coping. Workload and unpredicatabilities in staffing and scheduling were the main stressors.

Recognizing RN's cognitive style preferences
Article Abstract:
Nurse administrators can help staff nurses adjust to innovations in the clinical environment by recognizing differences in cognitive styles. Psychological research has identified 12 learning style variables. A survey of registered nurses and student nurses shows these groups are strongly committed to principles and prefer to solve problems with associates and authority figures. The survey also indicated the need for training in communication skills, negotiation, and clinical decision-making skills.

What's happened to health care? A consumer's perspective
Article Abstract:
Hospital care of an elderly patient who was taken suddenly ill is described. Observations of the quality of care the patient received suggested patients and family members are not told the full truth about the patient's condition, and that competition adversely affects the quality of patient care. A health care system which treats patients as consumers may create more problems than it solves.
