Corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis
Article Abstract:
Corticosteroid therapy (CTh) is a relatively common treatment used in a range of diseases. Its side-effects include osteoporosis, which is a decrease in bone mass and a deterioration in bone structure. Osteoporosis increases the fracture risk. Bone mass decreases rapidly in the first year of CTh and particularly in the first three months of treatment. Treatments to prevent osteoporosis in CTh include administration of bisphosphonates. Calcitonin may be helpful, and patients should make lifestyle alterations including stopping smoking and increasing the calcium content of their diet.
