Detection of Prostate and Colon Cancer
Article Abstract:
Screening men for prostate cancer using prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is very controversial. Proponents claim that PSA testing can detect tumors at an early stage when they are easily treated. However, PSA testing has a very high false positive rate and there is no evidence that PSA testing has lowered mortality rates from prostate cancer. Autopsies of older men show that many have benign tumors that never would have affected their survival. This must be balanced against the fact that prostate surgery can have substantial complications.

Results of repeat sigmoidoscopy 3 years after a negative examination
Article Abstract:
It may be necessary to repeat a sigmoidoscopy every three years to screen older people for colorectal cancer, according to a study of 9,317 people. All had a sigmoidoscopy three years after a negative sigmoidoscopy and 14% were found to have a polyp or mass in the colon. In many cases, it was a new growth because it was not seen during the first sigmoidoscopy. Sigmoidoscopy uses a flexible tube containing a small video camera to examine the inside of the colon.
