Cough control
Article Abstract:
Whooping cough is very infectious and begins with cold-like symptoms which develop into prolonged coughing fits during which the child may be sick or gasp for air. Vaccination has reduced the incidence of infection from 100,000 in the 1950s to 478 in 1997. Three major epidemics have occurred during this period because immunisation fell to 30% compared to the 1998 figure of over 90%. Health scares about the safety of immunisation have caused the fall in uptake. Most infants with whooping cough need to be put in isolation and treated with antibiotics to prevent further infection.

Ritual or reason?
Article Abstract:
Medical personnel carry out infection control measures without knowing why they are important and as more medical procedures are carried out in other departments it is essential that staff know about the scientific reasons for doing things. Some rituals may be unnecessary and research is needed to determine what is useful and what is not. The use of head wear, face masks, gowns, gloves and overshoes all need to be re-assessed because they may actually cause infection if not used correctly. Staff should be prepared to change their habits if research indicates it is necessary.

Is protective isolation necessary?
Article Abstract:
Issues concerning protective isolation for immunocompromised patients are discussed. It is emphasized that hand-washing is a key element in preventing the spread of infection, while the use of a single room for neutropenic patients has been shown to have no impact on the prevention of hospital-acquired infections.
