End-of-life debate moves to Congress; physicians dominate first hearing on assisted suicide
Article Abstract:
The House Judiciary constitution subcommittee held its first hearings on assisted suicide. Fifteen witnesses testified before the subcommittee, nine of which were physicians. American Medical Assn Pres Lonnie R. Bristow opposes physician-assisted suicide, saying it is a failure to deal with the complex end-of-life issues. Physician Timothy E. Quill supports assisted suicide for the terminally ill.

Physicians as sales reps? Involvement in multilevel marketing programs raises ethical concerns
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn's Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs will issue a report at its interim meeting in Dec 1997 that will state that physicians cannot sell non-health-related goods from their offices. There will also be discussions of physicians selling health-related goods from their offices at this meeting. Many physicians have also recruited their patients for these sales.
