Firm foundation? Going tax-exempt might solidify your market standing - but your hospital partner could end up as the only winner
Article Abstract:
Tax-exempt foundations are models for physician-hospital organizations that contain significant drawbacks. On one hand, they give physicians access to tax-exempt financing, provide regular hours and opportunities for education and research. However, physicians lose autonomy and control over revenue, patient records and other elements of their former practices. Hospitals are given most of the power in such arrangements; physicians should only enter into them if there is no other alternative.
