Medicaid block grants, caps could put squeeze on states
Article Abstract:
Congressional Republicans have proposed capping federal Medicaid spending growth at 4% a year and distributing Medicaid funds through block grants to the states. Proponents argue that the changes would bring Medicaid spending back under control and would better enable states to meet their residents' unique healthcare needs. But critics claim that the changes would hurt the ability of states to provide the poor with adequate care.

Bill may boost family costs for nursing homes
Article Abstract:
Republicans in Congress are sponsoring legislation to promote the concept of private long-term-care insurance as an alternative to Medicaid coverage for nursing home care. A good policy for a healthy individual 65 years old may cost $2,000 per year, and for a health individual 45 years old, approximately $600 per year. Critics of the proposed legislation warn that most individuals will not be able to afford such insurance.
