Cytokine production in whole blood cell cultures of patients with rheumatoid arthritis
Article Abstract:
The abnormal immune response associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may be related to an imbalance in the mediation factors produced by the CD4+ helper T cells, TH-1 and TH-2. Whole blood cell culture technique, instead of the standard separation of cells, was used to study the production of these factors called cytokines in the blood of 27 patients with RA and 23 healthy individuals. The production of the cytokine interleukin 12, generated by TH-1 cells, was diminished in patients with RA. Another factor, interferon gamma, produced by these cells as well, was also significantly decreased.

Will the increasing prevalence of atopy have a favourable impact on rheumatoid arthritis?
Article Abstract:
Atopy may reduce the development or severity of rheumatoid arthritis. Atopy incorporates the allergic conditions of asthma, hay fever, and eczema. Atopy and rheumatoid arthritis may represent opposite poles of the T helper cell immunological response. Substantial pollution in Eastern bloc countries has increased the prevalence of atopic disorders. The study of the association between atopy and rheumatoid arthritis should be pursued among the homogenous patient populations in locations such as the Baltic states.
