ORYX: the next evolution in accreditation
Article Abstract:
Accreditation will be linked to performance measures under the new ORYX initiative from the Joint Commission on Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). Sixty performance measurement systems have been approved by the JCAHO. Accredited hospitals and long-term care organizations must select from among these systems by the end of 1997 and begin submitting data to the JCAHO by the first quarter of 1999. The plan will be expanded to cover accredited health plans, integrated delivery systems and provider-sponsored organizations; and then remaining accredited organizations. ORYX PLUS is also available to hospitals on a voluntary basis.

Meeting JCAHO patient-education standards
Article Abstract:
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) created a separate chapter for patient education in 1994, stressing the interdisciplinary nature of the process. Patient education programs should be designed by evaluating needs related to the organization's top diagnosis-related groups. The policy should be hospital-wide and include staff-development programs. A variety of teaching methods can be used. The JCAHO review of patient-education documentation can be approached as an educational process.

Effective/simple variance trending
Article Abstract:
The Dominican Santa Cruz Hospital in Santa Cruz, CA offers a model of variance tracking which is both easy to use and meets standards set by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Tracking variances in clinical pathways can enhance understanding of patient outcomes and staff decision making. The clinical pathway involves documentation of predicted patient outcomes and expected staff actions.
