Dead reckoning
Article Abstract:
Annual statistics released by the HSC/E suggest that there were 302 deaths caused by occupational accidents in 1996/97, but the true figure is at least 1,500 deaths. The HSC/E data was collected under the RIDDOR 1995 reporting requirements which defined occupational fatalities as deaths connected with work activities or arising out of work. The 1996/97 data fails to include fatal injuries to members of the public arising from the expanded definition. RIDDOR 1995 also incorporates some other exemptions, such as deaths aboard civil aircraft between take-off and disembarkation.

Dead reckoning II
Article Abstract:
The collation of data recording the number of deaths in the UK resulting from accidents or illness connected with work do not reflect the true state of affairs because many doctors fail to recognize the initial reason for death. Statistics are further hindered by a lack of self-employed people coming forward to admit an accident was caused during working hours. Up to 4,000 people die in the home each year, although those connected to work are rarely reported.
