Death in the family: helping with pet bereavement
Article Abstract:
Those in the caring professions should understand how significant the loss of a pet can be, and know that the grief that arises can be just as severe as after the death of a relative or close friend. Some people depend on their pets, particularly older people, bringing them companionship, love, loyalty and a send of independence and responsibility, and the impact of a pet's death on an older person should not be underestimated. Most bereaved pet-owners need time to recover and unobtrusive offers of support are usually welcomed, together with the recognition of the importance of their loss.
