Declining morbidity and mortality among patients with advanced human immunodeficiency virus infection
Article Abstract:
Declines in mortality rates in AIDS patients are probably a result of aggressive treatment with various drug combinations. Researchers analyzed mortality rates among 1,255 AIDS patients between 1994 and 1997. Death rates dropped from 29.4 per 100 person-years in 1995 to 8.8 per 100 person-years in 1997. The rates of certain opportunistic infections also dropped during this period. Combination drug therapy, especially when protease inhibitors were used, was associated with greater reductions in mortality.

Mortality in the highly active antiretroviral therapy era: Changing causes of death and disease in the HIV outpatient study
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to describe mortality trends and causes of death among 6945 HIV-infected patients in the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) era, followed for a median of 39.2 months. Data from the studies revealed that although overall death rates remained low through 2004, the proportion of death attributable to non-AIDS diseases increased, and a longer time spent receiving HAART and higher CD4 cell counts at HAART initiation were associated with death from non-AIDS causes.

Clinical toxicity of highly active antiretroviral therapy in a home-based AIDS care program in rural Uganda
Article Abstract:
The clinical toxicity is evaluated in HIV-infected persons receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Uganda. The results have shown that clinical toxicities were common, but no patients discontinued ART due to toxicity and most of the common toxicities were managed with single-drug substitutions.
