Teasing out the tangles
Article Abstract:
Study is presented to provide an evidence that neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) are not causally linked to cognitive decline and they instead favor the hypothesis that soluble tau may be responsible for the loss of neurons and impaired memory function in Alzheimer disease. Analyses of transgenic mice expressing mutant tau indicate that A(beta) can promote formation of NFTs, suggesting that neurotoxicity in Alzheimer disease is caused by a number of events that starts with elevated production of A(beta).

The amyloid code
Article Abstract:
Many scientists believe that the protein triggers a series of steps, dubbed the amyloid cascade that leads to the memory loss and dementia in those afflicted with Alzheimer disease. It is believed that in familial or early onset forms of the disease, mutations in the amyloid precursor protein and the enzymes that clip it to form amyloid-beta, lead to a massive overproduction of amyloid-beta and a swift descent into disease.
