Deficient medical system could have cost lives in Gulf war
Article Abstract:
The General Accounting Office says that medical operations during the Gulf War were so poor that they would have been inadequate had the war been extended or had hostilities commenced sooner. The Army was unable to deploy medical personnel quickly enough because it did not have complete information about them. Doctors and nurses - many of them Army Reserve and National Guard personnel - were poorly trained. Some possessed inadequate skills or were too physically unfit for field conditions.

Restricting patents: bipartisan bill would bar ownership claims for medical methods
Article Abstract:
A law to rule out patents on medical procedures or methods has been proposed in the House of Representatives by Greg Ganske and Ron Wyden. For instance, Dr Samuel Pallin claims ownership of a method of closing without stiches the incisions for cataract surgery. The American Medical Assn considers such patents unethical, and the society's Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs plans a report urging doctors to take credit for innovations by publishing their results.

When coverage decisions threaten care: utilization review becomes new medical board concern
Article Abstract:
The Arizona Board of Medical Examiners has set a precedent for the sanctioning of health maintenance organization (HMO) medical directors. Although the director in question has filed a suit against the Arizona board, the board's disciplinary action will surely lead other state medical boards into similar actions. The Arizona case regards the denial by HMO director John F. Murphy of a gall bladder operation for a 46-yr old woman.
