Detection of gestational diabetes mellitus by homeostatic indices of insulin sensitivity: A preliminary study
Article Abstract:
A preliminary study to investigate whether homeostatic indices of insulin sensitivity might suitably screen for gestational diabetes mellitus is presented. Results reveal that homeostasis model assessment, quick insulin sensitivity check index, and fasting glucose are sensitive screening tests for gestational diabetes mellitus and can avoid oral administration of glucose-containing solutions.

A comparison of costs associated with screening for gestational diabetes with two-tiered and one-tiered testing protocols
Article Abstract:
The two-tiered protocol for diagnosing diabetes during pregnancy appears to be more cost-effective than the one-tiered approach. The one-tiered approach uses a two-hour glucose tolerance test with 75 grams of glucose whereas the two-tiered approach uses a one-hour glucose screening test with 50 grams of glucose and a three-hour glucose tolerance test with 100 grams of glucose.

Universal versus selective gestational diabetes screening: application of 1997 American Diabetes Association recommendations
Article Abstract:
Screening only pregnant women 25 years or older for gestational diabetes would detect 90% of all such cases, according to a study from the Mayo Clinic. In this study, 18,504 women were tested, regardless of their age. Only 3% of gestational diabetes cases would be missed if following the 1997 American Diabetes Association guidelines.
